A dramatic top of the tree!
When the Holidays come around each year, many people dread pulling out the Christmas Tree decorations, dusting them off and selecting a fresh tree or setting up the faux tree to set the mood for the season. Many times people get in the rut of doing the same old thing each year. Where is the fun in that? Ever since I was a little boy, I looked forward to Thanksgiving Dinner knowing as soon as the dishes were clean and put away, it was time to beg my mother to allow me to put up the Christmas Tree. Over the years I have had the honor and privilege of designing gorgeous, over the top Christmas Trees for Historic Hotels, Fine Homes, Celebrities, as well as my extended family members up in their California mountain cabin.
From simple family Christmas trees to 20 ft trees in a 85 year old historic downtown hotel, my flower guy designers have redefined the look of the Christmas Tree and exceeded the expectations of many. As the design stylist of my flower guy, I can consult with You giving You, your hotel, corporate office a Christmas Tree Makeover that will certainly “wow” all those who encounter it and set the tone for your holiday celebration. Simply contact us to set up a consulting appointment to begin the creative process. The Holidays are rapidly approaching so reserve your space now.
For those who love to do it yourself, here are some easy steps to take to give your tree a “make over”.
Step 1: Decide on a Theme:
Tips to help you decide on a theme:
What are your interest, hobbies, christmas fantasies?
creative- art-design influences?
What is the architecture, design of your location where the tree will be set up.?
Step 2: Choose a color scheme:
Tips to help you decide on a color:
What is your favorite color combination? Sometimes 2 -3 colors work well. Colors that are opposites on the color wheel tend to make each color “pop” and give you a more brilliant look. Monochromatic or various shades of the same color is also a great look as well.
What are the predominant colors in the tree area? Sometimes pulling a color out of a piece of art, or the walls, furniture will complete the look with your Christmas Tree being the focal point for the Holidays.
What color best suits your theme? google words relating to your theme and search for digital images that will show colors in the graphics. i.e. a mardi-gras theme would show brilliant colors in purple, green and gold.
Step 3: Select Items relating to your theme and color
Tips to selecting items.
Think outside of the tree! In other words, do not be limited to what you have seen or expect to see in a tree.

Find interesting branches, like manzanita, birch, curly willow, mossed branches that could be placed at the top of your tree.
Feathers can be a festive look, feather wreathes, placed near the top of the tree, clusters of pheasant feathers, ostrich feathers in the color of your theme, feather tassels, feather garlands, and my favorite, feather boas! Yes you got it, they really make a splash of unexpected Wow’s to your tree.
When in doubt add glitter! It is the Holidays after all, and the lights on your tree will only make anything in glitter sparkle like diamonds. Find branches that are covered in glitter or use spray adhesive and add it yourself. You can use iridescent (clear) glitter or a color that works with your theme.
Choose signature pieces that define your theme. Think of adding vintage bears, or dolls, Santa’s, jesters, clowns, to the tree. You may have to use poles disguised in the tree for extra support.

Silk Magnolia with sparkle
Choose silk flower garlands. This is a great way to add texture, color, glitter all in one. You can find these in high end christmas shops and florists, craft and silk flower stores. Make sure to invest in a high quality garland and bend each leaf and flower to make it look as natural as possible.
Prioritize your ornaments:
Steps that might help you.
Separate those ornaments that will go with your new theme.
If you have children that make wonderful ornaments for your tree each year, consider having a “family tree” in the family room or dining room for them to decorate and enjoy. This will satisfy your need to have a themed tree for you and your guest to enjoy and one for the kids to enjoy and participate in decorating.
Look for new ornaments that will accent your color and theme. You can find ornaments in many locations, i.e. dollar stores, department and drug stores, craft and holiday decorating stores.

Handmade Bows for the tree.
Handmade bows and Paper finish the look.
Steps to selecting ribbon and paper that will complete the look.
Find ribbon and wrapping paper that will match the color and or theme of your tree. Coordinating these two important compliment your tree decor.
Wrap all your gifts in the colors of your tree theme. Costco and other box stores are great resources for inexpensive wrapping paper in bulk.
Shop for ribbon that matches. Make hand made bows in proportion for your tree. You can place 2-3 bows toward the top of the tree nestled at the base of the branches you place shooting out of the top of the tree. Then place other bows throughout the tree on the tips of the branches. This will add visual lushness and texture for your tree. Place remaining bows on larger gift packages. Don’t buy store bought bows, they are ugly, cheap looking and will make your tree look absolutely ridiculous. A video link will be uploaded soon to show you a visual demonstration on making bows.
Other tips to consider:
Choose lights that reflect your theme. A vintage look may be best accented with multi colored lights. Single color lights can accent a certain color scheme. White lights are generally the best look for most trees.
Lower your energy bill by changing over to l.e.d. lights. They are a bit more expensive but last a lot longer and use about 20% of the energy a regular string of lights use.
Let your imagination run wild. Incorporate your passion for life, love, art show through your tree. Inspire others by what you create.
